Urgent Health UK (UHUK) welcomes NHS England’s decision to cover the medical indemnity costs of GPs undertaking out-of-hours shifts over the winter period.

This temporary respite will help to ease some of the significant pressures on out-of-hospital urgent care providers, thus, enabling them to provide a vital service to patients across the country.

This is an issue UHUK has campaigned on throughout 2015, as highlighted in the findings of our survey of GPs in August. The call for a solution formed an important element of UHUK’s position statement on delivering a more integrated urgent and emergency care sector.

We intend to continue engaging with officials and decision makers over the coming weeks and months to put in place a long-term solution beyond the winter period.
