Aneurin Bevan University Health Board (ABUHB) is the operational name of Aneurin Bevan Local Health Board. The Health Board was established on the 1st October 2009 and covers the areas of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport, Torfaen and South Powys.
The Health Board employs over 13,000 staff, two thirds of whom are involved in direct patient care. There are more than 250 consultants in a total of over 1000 hospital and general practice doctors, with 90 GP Practices, 6,000 nurses, midwives, allied professionals and community workers covering a population of approximately 600,000 (1/3 of Wales). Has 3 acute hospitals and 12 other hospitals. It opened 2 new local general hospitals in 2010 and 2011 and a Specialist and Critical Care Centre is planned.
The Health Board gained university status in December 2013, this prestigious status was granted after the Health Board had shown significant progress across a range of educational and research activities. Its Clinical School has 950 medical students and 350 post-graduate junior doctor replacements each year
